Elephant represent the largest land mammal currently still roaming across some parts of Africa and Asia, including Sumatra. Sumatran elephants, a very unique subspecies of Asian elephants, are now under serious threats, mainly due to habitat loss and poaching for their ivory. Since 2011, they are categorized as Critically Endangered under IUCN Criteria with population of less than 2000 individuals.
In Tesso Nilo, one of elephant key habitats in central Sumatra, such a team is known as “Flying Squad”. The team consists of Elephant keepers (Mahout) and trained elephants.
